What's pink, aqua and tall all over???

Friday, Friday, it is Friday, Friday, Friday, it is Friday, Friday.

I have been singing that in my head to the tune of the Ghostbusters song since I woke up.  I have no idea why.
So today is Friday.  Many fun things lie ahead! Tonight I am volunteering at an event at the Dallas Arboretum.
There is a gala celebrating the opening of a new eight acre Children’s park.  Something like 17 years of work and 60 million dollars went into this thing! The official name is the Rory Meyers Children's Adventure Garden, check it out here.
Here are the invites.

You know it’s going to be a great shindig when you have giant insects on the invitations.  Unfortunately, there is a monsoon going on in Dallas right now.  That really dampens (get it?) the whole evening.  There is supposed to be close to a thousand guests at the gala….we shall see how many show up in this downpour.
I will recap for y’all on Monday.
Saturday, I am going to my nephew’s 6th birthday party at a skating rink.  Very excited!  I am forcing the Fella to skate with me and he is sooooooo excited.  Afterward, we are going to go spend the night with my parents and get in some more family time.
That is about it for me today.  I did want to show y'all a few of the things I got on my lunch break yesterday when I went to a resale shop. I scored a bunch of fun stuff for almost no money.  Out of everything I got, I am oddly most excited about the adorable little set of stir-sticks.....

I also got the cute little vase they are in.  The vase’s name is Irene.  At least that is what someone scratched into the bottom of her.  Those items, total, were 75 cents.  Gotta love a good resale shop.  The stir sticks were still in the original packaging.
Why I am so excited over stir-sticks??  I have no idea.  They are just so cute.  And also I am having a moment with pinks and corals and the stir-sticks help tie-in my barcart to the dining room where I have been adding a lot of pinks and corals.
What yellow was to me the last year, coral is to me today.  Tiffany blue and aqua….you are my for always color.
What colors are you into right now?
Pink and aqua all over,

A girl and her patio, a makeover story

Don’t you just love a good makeover story??

I know I do. The ugly duckling turned swan story is an aged one. It has been told time and time again.

That is what we have here today, a story of transformation from rough around the edges to shiny, bright and beautiful!
But what do Eliza Doolittle, Laney Boggs and Gracie Lou Freebush not have in common with the ugly duckling in this story?
They aren’t furniture.
That is right.  This is your standard girl sees chairs on the side of the road, said girl then manages to cram all six chairs into her tiny hatchback while wearing a suit and heels in the rain type of story.

A tale as old as time, if you will.

I found six of these beauts on the side of the road one rainy, morning in May. This is not Spain, and the rain does not stay mainly on the plain. (Cheers to whoever got that lame joke.)
I decided to use these chairs in our backyard patio space.  So actually, this is a story about the makeover of an entire space....not just 6 free, lovely brown chairs.
Moving on, I wanted to pair the chairs with this table....

The full makeover story of this table can be read here.
I bought the outdoor rug at Wal-Mart for $25 at the beginning of the summer. I figured I would just roll with the whole southwestern, hacienda vibe of the rug for the entire outdoor space.
This is what that area looked like on the realtor listing when we bought the house.

And here it is right after we moved in, at my first little dinner party, before I had done anything to the table or chairs.

(Let me preface the run-down of this makeover story by saying that I do things, for my own home, the easy way.  I cut corners and I don’t stress out over things being perfect.  For example, I didn’t bother to sand or prime theses chairs before painting them.  They were free.  They are old and beat-up and would continue to get beat up outside.  They don’t need to be the most perfect things on Earth. NOBODY will notice one way or another.  That being said, when I do things for the homes of others, I am much more particular.)
Ok, I decided to go with this bright orange color for the chairs.

(Just realized, that is my bra, inside my purse, underneath the can, on top of my leg...awesome picture.  I am so good at picture taking.)
I then sprayed each chair with two coats.  Each chair took about a can and a half, total.  it probably would have taken less if I had primed them, but I then would have had to pay for the primer and I just didn’t feel like messing with it.

The above picture was after the first coat. I didn’t bother taking the chair seats off because I knew I would be recovering those.
After the second coat dried, I then painted the chairs with a coat of this stuff I got a Home Depot...

This is the same stuff I used to coat the outdoor table and the beer pong table.  It is water and weather resistant and has a great gloss finish.
That being said, it is somewhat pricey and can ruin fabric and paintbrushes. But a little bit goes a long way and the finish is worth the price and the mess.

See how the table and chair shine?

Once I was done painting the chairs, I turned my attention to the seats. I had decided to just paint the existing fabric with this tutorial, and then add a coat of the Minwax for durability against the elements. I had no idea if it would work or not but I didn’t really feel like paying for a bunch of expensive outdoor fabric.  I figured it was worth a shot to see if they would last a while with just painted seats.
On a whim, however,I decided to go and see what Joann’s had to offer in the outdoor fabric department before I gave the fabric painting tutorial a go.  I unscrewed one of the chair seats and took it with me for measuring purposes.  Luckily, because I waited so long in the summer to get around to the seats, the outdoor fabric at Joanne’s had gone on super clearance and I got enough fabric to cover all six chairs for $20!
Totally worth it.
I made a few little boards like this.....
To help me compare all the different fabrics with the rug.  I went with the fabric you see above.
The Fella unscrewed the rest of the seats for me.  We then measured six sections of the fabric out evenly to make sure we cut the fabric to correctly cover each chair.
My mother then helped me recover the chairs.  I did not take any pictures of this, which was so stupid of me, but it was soooooooooooooooooooooo simple.  All you need is a staple gun.  We just stretched the new fabric over the old fabric, tucking in the corners like you would while wrapping a present.  We then stapled the fabric down, underneath the seat.
There is a pretty good tutorial, here.  If these chairs were going to be used inside my home, I probably would have done all of the steps in this tutorial mentions.  However, because the chairs are being used outdoors and were not a big (any) investment, I didn’t go to all the trouble.
And voila!

I love the way they turned out.  Seriously easy, cheap and fun. (Please excuse all the leaves laying around, my mother would kill me if she knew I didn't sweep before showing y'all this.  Sorry Mama.)

Here is the area as a whole.

I don’t keep all six chairs out all of the time. I only bust those out when we have guests. Also, I left the other two chairs brown, just for fun.  I did cover those in the Minswax as well though.
The light fixture was given to me by an Aunt who bought a great midcentury to renovate. It is a swag light that just plugs in and has a little switch on the cord. I wound the chain and cord across and down the pergola to an outlet.  It took about five minutes.  It may or may not stay long term, but for now, I love it over this table.

So cute.
Down to the nitty, gritty......here is the cost breakdown:
Table = $5 at a garage sale
Hand sander for table make-over = already had
Outdoor Rug = $25 at Wal-Mart
6 chairs = free
Spray paint = about $16 for 6 cans
Fabric = about $20 here
Light fixture = free
Minswax = already had (but I think it was like $35 at Home Depot)
Staple gun and staples = already had
Table top accessories = already had this stuff around the house and these change weekly
Total for this project = about $60 for a complete outdoor space make-over
I hope this will inspire you to look at objects that may not necessarily strike your fancy, in a whole new light.  Before you go out and buy new look and see what do you have lying around the house, or find on the side of the road, that can be transformed with a coat of paint.  There is something so special about seeing the potential in a discarded item and being the one to bring that potential out for the world to see. You feel a sense of connection to it, to your home and to your surroundings.
Create the home you want,

Need some blog advice? I did too....

Did anyone notice how that my blog changed a little last week?

I now have follow me buttons for many social media outlets, my words don’t overlap the menus on the side and I learned how to html embed.  Doesn't the page look so much more professional and clean?
Did I spend hours on the internet researching how to do all of this, and then hours trying to actually get it to work on the blog and then end the evening by throwing my computer against the wall???
Nope.
I opted for the easy, none violent route and called, or emailed rather, Helene.
Are you thinking about starting a blog?  Do you already have a blog but could use a few pointers on how to get your blog “out there”? Have you been blogging for years and only have a handful of page hits a day?  (i.e. your mom and dog) Then you should call Helene.
Helene, of Helene in Between, is a very knowledgeable blogger.  On top of writing a thoughtful, humorous and successful blog, Helene’s day job is in Online Media.  Girl knows her stuff.
Following Helene’s advice has already gained me quite a few page hits and I have already made new friends that I know I wouldn’t have met had she not given me pointers on how to build a blog community.
Maybe I eventually (probably not) would have learned all of this on my own.  However, like many of you, I have a fulltime job and a pretty busy social life so I didn’t want to spend the next three years trying to do so.  I wanted to utilize the middle man and learn all of it right up front so that I could get the most out of blogging and as soon as possible.
Helene offers a bunch of different services.  Not just the ones I mentioned here.  Check out her services page.  She was super easy and fun to work with and very reasonable price wise.  Check her out...

I am so happy I did.

See?  I am smiling.

3.1 Phillip Lim for Target

Happy Monday, my loverlies!

Another weekend has come and gone and taken my happiness with it…jk.  I am still happy but would just prefer that it was still Saturday.
You know those weekends where you have to spend your entire Saturday doing something you hate so therefore it was a wash and wasn’t a Saturday after all?  That was this Saturday for me.
As I mentioned last week, my husband’s car bit the dust.  So we spent all day Saturday at a dealership negotiating the purchase of a new one.  And by all day, I mean all day.  7 hours in fact.  We had no idea it would take that long.  But we got him a reliable car that gets good gas mileage and at a price we were comfortable with…so really we couldn’t ask for more.
Here we are with our new ride...
Picture found here
Just kidding.

At least they had a TV so we could watch the Alabama/Texas A&M game while waiting on the financing people….. for 2 hours!!!!!  It was really packed and we were really far down the line, so there was a lot of sitting.

Theoretically, we were happy to see that the dealership was so packed and car sales doing so well.  That is an indicator of a recovering economy one would think.  That and the real-estate boom around our area, as I discussed at length, here.  Here’s hoping.
Everything was looking up Sunday morning because it was Phillip Lim day at Target!!!

Whoop whoop!
Did anyone else get out of bed at 7:30 Sunday morning to be there when the doors opened?  Or did y’all shop online at midnight?  I never do that, shop online at midnight, that is.  It stresses me out way too much. I know I miss out that way but too bad, so sad.
I didn’t get a lot, but here are the items I did get.

I am obsessed with the little tunic top.  The back, with the pleating, makes me weak in the knees.  It is very, VERY hard to find little tops like this that fit really tall women.  They always fall too short and the pleating/ruffles never hit at the right spot.  This top however, fits like a glove.

There were two pieces that the store didn’t have that I really wanted.
These tuxedo pants...

And this dress...

But I will live to shop another day.
I will leave you with a peek at an amazing Craigslist find I had last week...

Isn't that the sweetest lil' light fixture you ever did see?

I named her Flora and I love her so very much.
Craig (as in craigslist)...you're my best friend.
More to come on Flora and her new home later this week.
Stepping high in my new threads,

#colddeadfingers

I have totally sucked at being a blogger this week.

My evenings have been jam-packed, in a good way, so I haven't had a lot of time to write.

I had three separate girl's nights this week with three different groups of ladies.  Awesome times.  Next week I will have a recap of these evenings along with a full recap of the outdoor Baby-Que shower, complete with pictures!

We have busy Saturday planned but it will be followed by a very, lazy Sunday.
My cousin is coming up from Austin with his girlfriend to stay with us tonight.  This is a treat.  I usually only see him at Christmas.  I am very excited.  Tomorrow we are going to see him in action at his Tae Kwon Do tournament.  On top of that we have to buy and new car tomorrow, which is both exciting and stressful at the same time.
This all has to be accomplished by three o’clock tomorrow because we are then heading to a friend’s house to watch the Alabama/Texas A&M game.  This should be a great game, and also while I am there, I get to help said friend decorate her baby nursery!  Y’all all know how I love to decorate!!!!!
Speaking of decorating, I will leave you with some pictures from the #colddeadfingers challenge that Mandi at Vintage Revivals is hosting.  This is one of my favorite, if not my most favorite, home décor blogs.  This girl has some serious talent.  And her real life story is super intense and inspiring.  Check her out.
Basically the gist of the challenge is to Instagram pictures of the piece/s of décor around your home that someone would have to pry out of your cold dead fingers before you ever relinquished control of them.  I am so right there with her on this!  I am very emotionally attached to many of my pieces.  You would seriously have to step #overmydeadbody and pry them out of my #colddeadfingers to get near them.
I love searching #colddeadfingers on Instagram and seeing everyone’s loves.
Here are three of the examples around my home...

First, an $8 warehouse-sale find....

This original, canvas painting makes my heart race every time I see it, which is every day. The shade of blue speaks to my soul. Sounds silly, I know, but true nonetheless.  And I love the small pink accents throughout. Also, this thing is HUGE!!!  It takes up an entire wall in my dining room.  Why they only put $8 on it I WILL NEVER KNOW, but I am so grateful that they did.  I think they even knew the artist.  Crazy for them and lucky for me.
Next, and most dear to me, is my great-grandmother, Lulu's, mirror.

This mirror belonged to my father's, mother's mother. It has hung in my parent's home for as long as I can remember. When my husband and I moved into our new home, my mother gave it to us to hang in our dining room. I had not known previously that it was an heirloom. I instantly became seriously attached to this piece. My great-grandmother had this hanging in her beautiful New Orleans home and my grandmother even had her wedding pictures taken in front of it in the 1940's.

Here you can see the mirror on the wall behind my grandparents on their wedding day.
I am not sure of the full history of the mirror but I plan to find it out. It is possible this mirror has passed between many more generations within the family. It is very beautiful, very old, very large and very heavy.  The detailing on the rosettes is breathtaking. I love her.

Last, but certainly not least, is this sexy lady.

A vintage, 1940’s lucite and chenille vanity stool. Original PINK chenille!!!!! Swoon.

The story behind this one is fun.
A girlfriend of mine took me out into the boondocks of central Texas to a two story building full of vintage clothing, knick-knacks and furniture.  It is very much of the beaten path and has unreal finds.  While there, I met the adorable little, old lady that owns the shop along with her husband.  They were in their 80’s and had been collecting their whole lives.  They had some amazing stuff and even more amazing stories.
We spent about three hours talking to her and going through everything she had for sale.  As we were getting ready to leave, I spotted this beauty under a pile of clothes.  Of course, this was the one thing in the store that the woman just couldn’t bring herself to part with.  She had bought the stool from its original owner at a living estate sale in the 60’s and she was very emotionally attached to it…
I ended up leaving her with an offer and my phone number.  She called me that night.  She said her husband told her she was crazy not to sell it since they were, after all, in the business of selling antiques. She said that she knew I would love it and take care of it and so she was willing to part with the stool.  I got it the next day and have loved it ever since.  It is one of those pieces that even though I paid a little more than I am usually willing to dish out, I have never regretted it or second guessed my decision.
Isn’t she beautiful?  Aren’t those the sexiest legs you have ever seen on a piece of furniture??
Sir Kittypuss loves her too.....

By the way, the cat is #colddeadfinegrs as well!

What are some of your #colddeadfingers?

UPDATE 10/28/13: After posting this blog entry, I found a fantastic light fixture on Craigslist that I talk about here.  I then added a picture of it to Instagram with the hashtag colddeadfingers and tagged the creator fo the #colddeadfingers challenge, Vintage Revivals.  Today she included my sweet little light fixture on her second round-up of her favorite cold dead finger finds!  I admire her so much and I am so touched and happy to be included!!!

Happy Friday,

What songs define you?

My new friend Helene at Helene in Between is hosting the coolest link up!

Songs that define me.

I honestly don't know where to begin with this one. There are too many to count. Songs have such an emotional role in my life. Something that I always directly link to music is dancing.

Duh, right?

But seriously, I LOVE to dance.  I am not trained in anything, other than awesomeness, dancing is just something that I really love to do.

I love those moments when a song engulfs you as you spin, shake, shimmy, scream and sing on the dance floor.

The songs that I share here today may not necessarily be my favorite songs, but these are the song I know I can count on to transport me when I let loose to them on the floor.

Here is my dad and I dancing to "our song", Amarillo by Morning, during the father/daughter dance at my wedding.

.
Here are my best friend and I dancing to “our song”, I Like Big Butts, at my wedding.

Complete with duckface and all.

Here we are again losing ourselves in our favorite song to perform, Bohemian Rhapsody.

Speaking of performing, here I am with my band singing what is the ultimate jam-out, get down, feel the words, sing your heart out, end of the night song...Don't Stop Believing!

Oh wait....that is just pasty legged me stage-bombing someone else's band while they sang Don't Stop Believing.

Whatevs.

What songs define you?
